As Kenyans on Twitter tweet about the explicit nature of the latest Video by Sauti Sol, the Kenyan afro–pop band has been nominated as Africa’s Best Group at the 2014 MTV Music Awards (MAMAs). They are the only act representing East Africa in that herculean-tight category of Africa’s Best, announced in South Africa, Johannesburg on April 16th.
Sauti Sol band members received the news with delight and honour. Mudigi Savara says,
“Being the only group in East Africa makes us feel honoured. It’s a good opportunity for Kenyans to represent East Africa well. Most times, East Africa’s sound hasn’t been defined as unique enough and we (Sauti Sol) are one of the groups that will define the East African sound. I am so proud that Sauti Sol are pioneers of the new East African sound that will stay forever. We hope to leave a legacy and push the East African sound worldwide.”
“Our new song “Nishike” and the new album, as a whole, depicts exactly that—telling African stories through song. We will live and die in Africa.”
2014 MAMAs will be held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday 7th June. Voting for the MTV Africa Music Awards is open until midnight on 4 June 2014.
