February 4th 2004 is when Mark Zuckerberg launched theFacebook while a student at Harvard University. The site was conceived as a way to connect students, and let them build an online identity for themselves. It has since expanded to cover a large swath of the planet, with more than 1.2 billion people -- one-seventh of the world's population -- using its site on a monthly basis, according to the company's own recent figures.

This year Facebook plans low-key birthday bash,  belated party and an eye toward the future. "Just as we do every year, we will have an internal party on Friday afternoon," Facebook spokeswoman Arielle Aryah told AFP in response to a query regarding the company's birthday celebration plans.

Facebook's impact has been such that it created a new meaning for the word "friend" - as in "to friend someone on Facebook" - a category encompassing acquaintances or contacts who, for whatever reason, are interested in following a person's Facebook posts.

"Facebook has made the world much smaller, much more interactive," said Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry.

In its short history, Facebook has become a part of daily life for more than a billion people around the globe.
"More than 20 percent of all time spent on the Internet is spent on Facebook," says Lou Kerner, founder of the Social Internet Fund.

In Kenya majority of Facebook users access the internet giant through their phones and facebook has made impacts in the lives of its users; some have found love, others made business deals through facebook, while the other side of the coin some have had terrible experiences on the social media giant.

We at Slugline only admire Facebook success and are happy that it has made it this far, very few companies by youth make it past their 5th birthday. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who in May will turn 30, and one of the wealthiest people on the planet has always stressed that Facebook's mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.
